Is it ‘A number of people is’ or ‘a number of people are’?

Many of us faces this alot . But it's quite simple . (if not , it will be )


The expression ‘a number’ is mainly singular , but the phrase ‘a number of’' is widely used with plural nouns (Example : people , birds etc) .

So you should use be using plural verb .


A number of people are absent today .



(note: In case of  "the number" don't use plural , as it is singular itself

The number of  bird here has increased since this morning.
